The Dog Days
Are Here.
Surrender.

That beautiful, slow-motion stretch of summer where the heat is an excuse to do absolutely nothing.

There's a specific kind of afternoon that only happens in August. It arrives sometime after lunch when the heat has settled in and made itself at home, and the whole world seems to agree — collectively and without discussion — that nothing urgent is going to happen for the next several hours.

The air is thick. The ice melts too fast. Somewhere a ceiling fan is doing its best. This is the Dog Days, and they are, without qualification, a gift.

A Brief and Completely Unnecessary History of Dog Days

The term comes from the ancient Romans — they noticed that the hottest stretch of summer coincided with the rising of Sirius, the Dog Star, the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major. They called this period dies caniculares — the days of the dog. They were not particularly thrilled about it either. But they named it, which is a very human thing to do: give a name to something unbearable so it feels at least a little more manageable.

Modern Dog Days run roughly from early July through mid-August. The specific dates don't matter. You'll know you're in them.

The Art of Doing Almost Nothing

The Dog Days require a certain surrender. You don't fight the heat. You arrange yourself horizontally wherever the breeze finds you. You eat cold things. You move at the speed of a song playing in the distance from three houses over.

Backyard chairs at four in the afternoon. A popsicle that's winning the race against your ability to eat it. Bare feet on grass that somehow still feels cool an inch below the surface. A conversation that starts and stops and starts again without anyone keeping track. The slow golden stretch of a summer evening that seems unwilling to end, and the collective feeling that everyone in the vicinity is fine with that.

What You Wear Matters (But Not That Much)

This is also the stretch of summer where your wardrobe does the heavy lifting. You're not getting dressed so much as choosing which tee to be comfortable in while time passes pleasantly around you. The right graphic tee isn't fashion during the Dog Days — it's armor against having to think about what to wear when it's 94 degrees.

Soft. Breathable. Exactly what you'd reach for without thinking. The kind of tee you've washed forty times and it just keeps getting better. That's the Dog Days uniform, and it's a good one.

The End of Summer Is Coming (Don't Think About It)

The Dog Days have an expiration date. There will come a morning — usually sometime in late August, when you're not expecting it — where something is different. A degree or two cooler. A light that hits at a slightly different angle. The faintest whisper of something that isn't quite fall but is definitely not summer anymore.

But that morning isn't today.

Today is for the hammock, the popsicle, the fan doing its best, and the particular satisfaction of an afternoon where absolutely nothing happened, and you were present for all of it.

Do less.
Feel better.

Surrender to it.
